Details about Squeak and Squawk
The curlew kids' picture book begins with the curlew mother protecting her two eggs. Spikey, the echidna walks by chasing ants to eat. The curlew is spreading her wings, and hissing at Spikey. The curlew father is not far away and copies the actions of the mother.
A few weeks later, the chicks have hatched. Both parents tend their young feeding and showing them what to eat.
The artwork shows the young birds laying flat on the ground, which is typical for them them while hiding from danger.
Once, the curlew chicks have grown up a little, they explore their surroundings. They find another striped chick. It is Cassy the cassowary. She points to her father. The story talks about the difference that the curlews will be able to fly, while the cassowaries won't be able to. But, both species are growing up in a nest on the ground.
Once the curlew chicks have grown up, they stay with their parents for several months longer. Then, they venture out into the world to raise and protect their own families.
